The Rich Fool

Rich Toward God

Illustration for The Rich Fool

A man came through the crowd. "Teacher, tell my brother to split the inheritance with me." Jesus said, "Friend, watch out. Be on your guard against every kind of greed."

Then He told them a story. "A rich farmer's land produced a great crop. He said to himself, 'What shall I do? My barns are already full.'"

"'This is what I will do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones. I will store all my grain and my goods there.'"

"'Then I will say to myself — take life easy. You have plenty laid up for many years. Eat, drink, and be merry.'"

"But God said to him, 'You fool. This very night your life will be asked back. Who will get the things you have stored?'"

"That is how it is," Jesus said, "for anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God." A heart given to Him holds riches no barn can keep.
