Job's Faith

Trusting God

Illustration for Job's Faith

Job was a good man who feared God and turned away from evil. He had a large family, many flocks, and a full house. One day, all of it was taken from him. His servants. His animals. His children.

Then Job himself grew sick with painful sores from head to foot. He sat on the ground in ashes. He tore his robe. And he said, "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord."

Three friends came to sit with him. They were quiet for seven days. Then they began to speak, and their words did not help. "You must have done something terrible," they said. But Job had done no wrong.

Job cried out to God with his questions. "Why? Why?" He did not curse God, but he did not pretend. He waited for an answer.

At last the Lord spoke out of a whirlwind. He did not explain every sorrow. He spoke of oceans and stars, of wild horses and stormy seas — of things too wonderful for Job to know. Job fell silent. "I have heard of you," he said, "but now my eyes have seen you."

The Lord restored Job. He gave him twice as much as he had before. Job lived long, and saw his children and grandchildren. And in his darkest day he had said it true: "I know that my Redeemer lives."
