Illustration for Angel Visits Mary

In the town of Nazareth, in the country of Galilee, there lived a young woman named Mary. She was engaged to a carpenter named Joseph, who was of the house of David.

God sent the angel Gabriel to her. "Greetings, favored one. The Lord is with you." Mary was troubled. She did not know what this could mean.

The angel said, "Do not be afraid, Mary. You have found favor with God. You will have a son. You will call His name Jesus. He will be great, the Son of the Most High. His kingdom will have no end."

"How can this be?" Mary asked. The angel said, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you. The power of the Most High will overshadow you. The holy child will be called the Son of God. For nothing is impossible with God."

Mary bowed her head. "I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be to me according to your word." The angel left her.

Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who was also with child. When Elizabeth heard Mary's voice, the baby inside her leaped for joy. Mary lifted up her voice and sang. "My soul magnifies the Lord. He has looked on the humble state of his servant. Holy is His name."
