Illustration for An Angel Visits Mary

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth. He came to a young woman named Mary. She was engaged to Joseph, of the house of David.

Gabriel came in. "Greetings, favored one. The Lord is with you." Mary was troubled at his words. What kind of greeting could this be?

"Do not be afraid, Mary," the angel said. "You have found favor with God. You will conceive in your womb and bear a Son. You shall call His name Jesus."

"He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. His kingdom will have no end."

"How can this be?" Mary said. "I am a virgin." "The Holy Spirit will come upon you," Gabriel answered. "The power of the Most High will overshadow you. The Child to be born will be called holy — the Son of God. For nothing is impossible with God."

Mary bowed her head. "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be to me according to your word." The Word was on His way. Heaven was bending low.
