Two Travelers Meet Jesus

On that same first day, two followers of Jesus walked from Jerusalem toward a village called Emmaus. They were talking about all that had happened.

While they talked, Jesus Himself came near and walked with them. But their eyes were held. They did not know Him.

"What are you discussing?" He asked. They stopped, looking sad. "Are you the only one in Jerusalem who does not know? Jesus of Nazareth — a mighty prophet. The rulers handed Him over to be crucified. We had hoped He was the one to redeem Israel."

"How slow of heart you are to believe," He said. Then, beginning with Moses and the prophets, He explained to them all the scriptures that spoke of Himself.

As evening came, they pressed Him. "Stay with us." He went in. When He sat at the table, He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them.

Their eyes were opened. They knew Him — and He vanished from their sight. "Were our hearts not burning within us while He talked with us on the road?" They got up that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. The Lord is risen, indeed.
