Illustration for Dorcas the Seamstress

In Joppa lived a follower of Jesus named Tabitha. In Greek, her name was Dorcas. She was full of good works and gifts for the poor. She sewed clothes for widows and for those in need.

In those days, she fell sick, and she died. Her friends washed her body and laid her in an upstairs room.

Two men were sent to Lydda, where Peter was. "Please, come to us without delay."

Peter came. The widows stood around him weeping. They showed him the coats and garments Dorcas had made while she was with them.

Peter put them all out of the room. He knelt down and prayed. Then he turned to the body. "Tabitha, get up." She opened her eyes. She saw Peter and sat up.

He gave her his hand. He raised her up. He called the believers and the widows back in, and he presented her alive. The news spread through all of Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.
